Jesus: sundry points: Matthew 10:23

Passage Matthew 10:23

A set of sayings of Jesus that the argument finds troubling. In Matthew 10:23 he tells the disciples they will not have gone through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes; two thousand years later, nothing of the kind has happened. In Mark 4:11-12 he explains that he speaks in parables so that those outside will see and not perceive, lest they turn and be forgiven, which the argument reads as concealing his message. In Luke 14:26 he says anyone who does not hate father, mother, wife and children cannot be his disciple.

John 14:6 has him say that no one comes to the Father except through him, but Peter says in Acts 10:34-35 that in every nation anyone who fears God and does what is right is acceptable to him. The argument sets the two sayings in tension.

When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

Matthew 10:23

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 14:6

So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.
